October 17th through the 31st will be the first annual Cinemania Fright Nights! 15 days of fun and terror! There's bound to be something for everyone from terrifying horror films to movies the whole family can enjoy and watch on Halloween.
Here's just a few of the titles in the lineup:
A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master
House on Haunted Hill
Ernest Scared Stupid
Last year I did 2 posts on fun movies to watch on Halloween, so I decided to make it a tradition. Last year I focused more on horror films and decided this year would add a few more family friendly movies into the mix. There is something for everyone, so lets get started with this years list!
Ernest Scared Stupid - It may be a horror comedy geared more towards kids, but Ernest Scared Stupid has some qualities that appeal to the young and the old. The jokes are corny, the monsters are laughable and the lead actor is a goofball that looks like he had fun making this movie.
The Witches - Based on the book by Roald Dahl, this film scared me as a kid due to its character design of the witches natural forms. Since it was brought to us by Jim Henson studios, that's no surprise. Now though I can appreciate this film for its story telling and visual style and its great in both aspects. Its visuals may scare some of the younger kiddies, but with great storytelling and acting, its a good fil…
Heartbreak ridge is a 1986 action/comedy/drama movie directed by and starring Clint Eastwood. A standard military film, which while it has a standard plot is more driven by its characters. It's a motion picture made when more and more action films were becoming special effects heavy, but is more of a bare bones action film.
The plot is fairly straight forward, Clint plays Tom Highway, a veteran marine. Highway seeks a transfer to a new unit and is put in charge of training a recon team to straighten up and turn them into marines. At the same time as he is training this platoon, he knows that his life as a military man is coming to an end and is trying to cope with that. In addition to everything else that is going on he also talks to and seeks to mend fences with his ex wife.
I found this plot to be entertaining, despite being a fairly cliched story. Its a very well written and well paced story that has a little bit of everything, but never too much. Its balanced out and every pa…
When I saw the cover art for "Curse of The Dragon Slayer", images popped in my head of every generic fantasy B movie I have seen over the years. At a closer look, the plot really didn't sound like it involved dragons at all, which usually is a bad sign considering the title. Despite the potential of wasting time on it, I gave it a watch and I have to say I was actually surprised with how good it turned out to be.
Plot Summary: Medieval knight Keltus and elfin bounty hunter Nemyt trail a sinister secret cult conspiring to unleash the god of the undead from the underworld.
I'll admit the generic sounding plot didn't help stop my initial fears about this movie, but my thoughts changed within the first few minutes of watching. Yes it is still a simple and straightforward story, and yes it has all the cliches you would expect from a fantasy film, but to be honest that's kinda what made it so fun. This film felt like a role playing game come to life and it embrace…
